UES Literacy Development Checklist

Welcome to the Literacy Development Checklist website!

This website is designed for use in a study of teacher professional development in early literacy funded by the National Science Foundation. The study, Bridges to Student and Teacher Learning: Assessment and Intervention of Early Literacy, is being conducted under the auspices of Seeds University Elementary School, UCLA and the Department of Education at UCLA.

The website is home to both the Literacy Development Checklist (LDC) and the accompanying manual A guide to using the Literacy Development Checklist. The checklist is designed for assessment and intervention in early literacy skills. The LDC manual gives instructions for how teachers might best use the checklist in their classroom. The LDC was developed through the collaborative efforts of teachers and staff of the University Elementary School, and researchers in the Department of Education.

The LDC was developed in response to recent government reports that recommend the comprehensive assessment of early literacy skills starting in Kindergarten grades. These reports describe how best to prevent reading difficulties in the early grades through gathering information about children’s oral language and emergent literacy abilities.

The LDC goes one step further to also include in-class intervention suggestions for use with those students that a teacher feels may benefit from extra help during the early stages of reading acquisition.

This site is restricted to those teachers and researchers who are participants in the National Science Foundation study.
